This book examines the changing police landscape over the past 25 years to establish how Police Leadership has evolved to meet this challenge. Through interviews with 35 Chief Police Officers in the UK, the author explores a range of policing issues such as crime investigation, terrorism, police governance, austerity issues, the role of the IPCC and public order provision. The book also highlights views on key topics such as armed policing, globalisation of crime and the structure of forces.
Building on the seminal text Chief Constables: Bobbies, Bosses or Bureaucrats by Robert Reiner, which is this year celebrating its 25th anniversary, this book brings research on policing up to date with the modern world.

While excellent examples of Prairie style architecture exist throughout the region, exploring the cultural significance of how the Roycroft Campus in East Aurora galvanized the movement is still central to the Arts and Crafts ethos. The movement has continued to inspire artists over the years, and it remains fundamental to the work of contemporary artists.
In the late s industrialization was stepping on daily life. The Arts and Crafts movement emerged as a reaction to the effects of industrialization, which many believed were deteriorating morals and craftmanship. Originating in England, the Arts and Crafts movement arrived in the U. Founded as a self-publishing printing press for Hubbard in , the Roycroft Campus evolved into a community of more than working artists and craftspeople within 20 years.

Most Dirk van Erp hammered copper pieces are signed with his impressed windmill signature. There are several variations of this windmill signature that help us determine the approximate date the piece was made. The first variation of the famous windmill signature is pictured above. So now we have covered all of the basic windmill signature variations, but what if a piece is unsigned?
Could it still be an unsigned Dirk van Erp piece?

A note on dating pieces based on marks : unfortunately the myths associated with the dates of Roycroft copper marks have been further perpetuated by a Roycroft collector guide published in This mis guide provides the following incorrect dates:. After over 10 years of studying pieces, catalogs and marks, here is my guess at a more correct chronology:. Also note that big early marks are probably earlier in this range than small ones – see below middle mark – ish to ish late mark – ish to There was certainly some overlap in the use of the early, middle and late marks, meaning that a piece with a middle mark could have been made a little prior to or even after Early mark.
This one I refer to as the “big spindly” early mark. Note the long span of the crosses and their fineness. The big spindly shows up on really early things like hand-raised bowls, shaft vases, things with cutouts, etc. Like all the early marks, it has little curls on the ends of the R.

What is the origin of the Roycroft name? Elbert Hubbard gave various explanations at various times. Roycroft was the surname of a pair of English printers, whose work is to this day both respected and collected. Hubbard probably had heard of them on his earlier trip to England and wanted to give his new, independent press a name with an English medieval cachet.

I was amazed by the stuff I saw and thought that someday when I could buy real furniture I would love to get some.
I remember being shocked at the sticker prices, I would turn over a Roycroft vase and it cost dollars. But a month or so later I went to a flea market and bought my first Arts and Crafts piece, a J. Young side chair, which I still own. At that point I realized you could get Arts and Crafts at reasonable prices if you go to flea markets and antique shows. I started out pretty broadly with Arts and Crafts , before focusing in on Roycroft.
In the beginning I bought Stickley furniture , of which I still have a half a dozen pieces. I was collecting Fulper pottery, Rookwood, and Marblehead. And I decided I really liked the metalwork the most. Kornacki : The story begins with the Roycroft community and a guy named Elbert Hubbard.

The Copyright of Design Act initiated the use of the diamond registration mark used to confirm that a design has been registered in Britain. The diamond contained enough information to allow identification from the official records held by the Patent Office. There was a letter to represent the year so the first series ran from to Other letters identified the day and month of registration, the material and bundle number. By shifting the positions of the identifiers, a second series was started and lasted until The Patents, Designs and Trade Marks Act of rationalised the system and thereafter only a number series was used.
The system of registering designs with a specific number was introduced at the end of It superseded the previous ‘Diamond’ registrations. Such designs could then be produced in quantity for as long as needed or fashionable and numbers therefore only give the earliest date in which an object could have been produced. Since improvements in design have always been a driving force in the industrial societies, many of the numbers would only have been used for a few years and therefore do give a helpful guide.
The numbers can be used to assess the first year of manufacture from these approximate figures showing the first numbers issued each year Numbers after are taken from the graph below, plotted from PRO files. Other sources may vary. Manufacturers frequently applied these marks to all products rather than just those destined for export.
By Mark Roycroft, published by Palgrave. The role of a chief constable has changed, and the world they operate in. But to repeat, the strength of the book is in the interviews; Roycroft is giving us what his interviewees are telling him. But that is only a quibble because the author has plainly put in the hard work of actually speaking to present and retired chiefs and PCCs — some 89 in all — and that spade work and the findings deserve the widest audience.

Making the transition to adult life is a difficult time for most young people, but especially difficult for young people leaving care who may not have enjoyed the stability of a settled family life or the support of their own family. Care leavers often have to cope with living independently at a young age and can face the future feeling vulnerable and alone. The Brian Roycroft Fund provides financial support to care leavers to achieve their aspirations and ambitions as they start their future lives.
Brian died in and left a remarkable legacy of progress in social welfare and a more optimistic future for children in the care of local authorities.
